Dr. Chuck Pitts became a full-time faculty member at HGST in fall, 1999, following a summer teaching adjunct courses. In 2002, he was also named Associate Academic Dean, currently holding the position of Associate Dean of Curriculum and Instruction, as well as Associate Professor of Old Testament.
Dr. Pitts grew up in Pasadena, Texas, graduating from Sam Rayburn High School. He is married to Beth McDonald Pitts, who is also from Pasadena.
Dr. Pitts received a BA degree from Houston Baptist University and MDiv and PhD degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, the latter completed in 1989. His major areas of study were Old Testament and Biblical Archaeology/Backgrounds. During PhD studies, he also served as Academic Fellow for Dr. R. Dennis Cole, Professor of Biblical Archaeology. His dissertation was entitled A Critical Analysis and Evaluation of Gerhard von Rad’s “Short Historical Creed.”
In August 1989, Dr. Pitts and his family moved to Warroad, Minnesota, to start a church. Warroad is 6 miles from Canada in northwest Minnesota. He worked there for 6 years, finding the church planting work challenging and stimulating. In 1995 they moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where he worked with Superior Baptist Chapel, Superior, WI, in a bi-vocational assistant role. Beth received her teaching degree from University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1998, while living in Duluth. Later that year, after nine years in Minnesota, working with church planting in Minnesota and Wisconsin, Dr. Pitts returned to Houston. In case anyone might wonder, yes he does miss Minnesota winters and hates Texas summers!
Dr. Pitts is also involved in local church ministry role, serving on the staff of Ranch Community Fellowship as the leader of the worship team. The church is a growing contemporary church in the Northwest Harris County area. This role allows Dr. Pitts to enjoy and express his love of music, especially loud rock music.
After teaching for 7 years at a Cy-Fair ISD school in NW Houston, Beth is now a school counselor in Tomball. She will complete her Masters in School Counseling degree in May 2007. Dr. Pitts’ daughter, Melody, is now married and living in NW Arkansas, where she is working on an Elementary Education degree, while also working in youth ministry. His son, Jordan, attends Jersey Village High School. Both children share their father’s love for music—both listening and performing.
