COURSE DESCRIPTION

                        A continuation of OT 551 (prerequisite).  A continuation of the study of vocabulary and syntax with special attention to the weak verb.  The course includes extensive reading from the Hebrew Bible and an introduction to exegetical procedures based on the Hebrew text.  Three hours.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the semester, the student should be able to:

1.                  Translate unfamiliar passages of moderate difficulty from the Hebrew Old Testament,

2.                  Read aloud from the Hebrew text, showing a mastery of Hebrew script and pronunciation,

3.                  Identify and translate basic vocabulary words, as presented in the exercises of each chapter of the textbook,

4.                  Identify and translate the roots or stems of Hebrew words, thus displaying recognition of the changes in and additions to the roots found in various forms, and reproduce from memory representative paradigms of Hebrew verbal and nominal forms, and

5.                  Perform basic exegetical practices with the Hebrew text, including understanding basic syntactical relationships of the Hebrew language and interpretative procedures when dealing with the original text.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Attendance and class participation based on daily assignments (see policies below).
  2. Readings and daily assignments from Kelley as assigned in the schedule below. The student should study the material and move immediately into the daily assignments, which are due each class period. A selected answer key can be found in the Handbook.

Daily work is the key to learning Hebrew. The student must work daily on the material. Falling behind can be fatal to the learning process!

  1. Translate, and discuss where required, selected portions of Genesis as assigned in the schedule below.  Translations should include locating all verb forms fully, with stem, form, person, gender, number, and root.  The professor has supplied translation notes to help the student with especially difficult forms or forms that the student has not yet studied.
  2. The student will be required to write a 6-10 page exegesis paper on a passage from Genesis. The paper should include translation of the text (approximately 10 verses), discussion of relevant terms, phrases, and syntactical forms, and evaluation of any controversial translation or textual issues. The scripture text may be a text that was assigned for a daily assignment. The student should consult at least 5 sources outside of the course textbooks. This paper is due the week before the final exam.
  3. A final exam will be administered during the assigned class period. The exam will cover the translation exercises from class, as well as important interpretative insights gained from the translation.

GRADING SYSTEM

Final grades will be calculating according to the following system.

            Daily Assignments                     50%

            Exegesis Paper             25%

            Final Exam                               25%

POLICIES

1.   Attendance is required at scheduled classes. Two or three excused absences will not affect the student’s grade. In order to learn Hebrew, however, the student must be in class and complete the required daily work.

  1. Work is expected on the due date. Late work will receive a letter grade reduction until it is one week late. After one week, the assignment will receive a two letter grade reduction. After two weeks the assignment will not be accepted and a zero will be entered as the grade for the assignment, unless arrangement is made with the professor.

  1. In accordance with the policy of HGST, students should not bring cell phones and pagers to class unless they are turned off. These devices are serious disruptions in class.

GRADING SCALE

The following grading system will be used for this class, remembering that and “A” is a superior grade, a “B” an above average grade, and a “C” is quality, satisfactory work.

            A = 94-100%

            B = 86-93%

C = 78-85%

D = 70-77%
