Objectives of the Doctor of Ministry Degree Program

 

The objectives of the Doctor of Ministry degree program are that the student shall demonstrate the following:

  1. Growth in the capacity to understand and interpret ministry in relation to biblical, historical, theological, and pastoral disciplines.
  2. Growth in the capacity to articulate and refine a theology of ministry while engaging in practice of ministry according to that theology.
  3. Growth in the capacity to function in an appropriate manner in the skill areas of ministry and to manifest the personal qualities normally considered essential in those areas at an advanced level of ministerial competence.
  4. Ability to engage profitably in inductive learning related to a primary ministerial function.
  5. Ability to integrate and apply data and experiences drawn from a variety of interdisciplinary combinations.
  6. Ability to use one's ministerial context as a learning environment, with appropriate supervision and access to available resources.
  7. Ability to profit from and contribute to peer learning and evaluation related to a primary ministerial function.

 

The goals of the Doctor of Ministry degree program are further defined by the following expectations. The program will:

  1. Enable the participant to develop a theology of ministry which is responsive to the leadership of God and the needs of the church or ministry in which he or she serves;
  2. Satisfy the demand for his or her continued education in ministry;
  3. Renew the personal life of faith and servanthood of the participant and stimulate spiritual growth;
  4. Stimulate continued growth in biblical and theological foundations;
  5. Develop skills that facilitate intellectual inquiry, creativity, critical thinking, and pastoral practice;
  6. Provide means for the student to attain a very high level of competence in the skills of ministry and leadership, including leadership development and church finance;
  7. Enable the participant to communicate the truth of God's Word effectively with greater competency in the total practice of ministry; and
  8. Enable the participant to acquire a sensitivity for the needs of society, thus preparing him or her for excellence in leadership in ministry in a complex and changing world.
