
Overview of Masters Degrees
The Master of Divinity is the basic professional degree for the ministry of the local church, though it also provides preparation for other ministries.
The Master of Arts is a research degree in general theological studies, with elective courses that provide for variation in emphasis based on individual interests and objectives.
One who has attained a general knowledge of the world and human institutions at the baccalaureate level seeks through these programs to understand the church and the ministerial task and to acquire the knowledge and the competencies that will enable him or her to provide effective leadership within the church.
Pre-Theological Education
One who has met the challenges of college work with a satisfying sense of achievement and who senses God's guidance and call to the ministry will find that when time and energy are devoted to the seminary program, his or her personal and professional growth will continue as gifts in ministry flourish and mature. It is not possible nor desirable to prescribe only one form of pretheological education, since churches vary in expectations, and individual gifts and callings for ministry differ. But some areas are essential, and it is desirable that pretheological education provide in-depth understanding in several areas, including most of the following:
English composition and literature
Other communications courses, such as
Social sciences, especially psychology and sociology
Other humanities courses, including
religious studies, mathematics and natural sciences
Introductory studies in the theological disciplines, especially
