In 2010, HGST welcomed our new President, Dr. James Furr, to the HGST family. In addition to his role as President, Dr. Furr serves as Professor of Practical Theology and Christian Ethics. Prior to his time at HGST, Dr. Furr was an Associate Professor in the School of Theology at Houston Baptist University and Director of the Antioch Institute for Missional Theology and Leadership. For two decades before those academic appointments, Dr. Furr provided consulting and training services to congregations and church leaders through various venues across the country. He is co-author of the popular Jossey-Bass book Leading Congregational Change.
Dr. Furr’s areas of special interest and experience include organizational systems, leadership development, strategic change, and the interaction between church and culture. His congregational roles have included service as a pastor, interim pastor, and Christian educator. Dr. Furr has a Ph.D. in Church and Community Studies from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville and a M.Div. from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City.
